Isn't Coverity typical commercial code?
If the statistics are correct then the Code used to find bugs in code has more bugs than the code it is analyising. This all sounds like more of an endorsement for Coverity than for mySQL.

I'm all for any alysis tool that will find flaws. After all, my compiler finds all kinds of bugs. However, nothing beats a few thousand developers trying to impress their peers by finding and repairing a bug in a code. Add in a diverse and numerous range of users with access to an honest, non-commercial feedback mechanisism and you are bound to produce a refined product.

The problem with many of the commercial products I use is that the company that owns the code rarely wants to hear about the flaws - especially in a public forum. Publisizing bugs and cleaning up old code doesn't produce as much of a cash flow as adding in new flashy features. I will not be surprised by any study that show open source produced cleaner code than your average commercial product.
