- Fewer Bugs Versus Simpler Application
- You're almost right, except when they start talking about the number of bugs per thousand lines of code. This is the big equalizer. If you write a sofware with 1000 lines of code or a billion, statistics tell us that you will have an average of x amount of bugs per 1000 lines of code. This statistic is much more telling that the total number of bugs discovered. Microsoft might have some of the best coders in the world working for them, but their design teams are horrible. The biggest reason for this is Microsoft has decided that quantity over quality is the development paradigm that suits them well. They'd rather introduce 10 new functions that have been tested/debugged 95% of the way rather than cut that number to 6 and squeeze out that final 5% of testing to make absolutely sure the code is solid. The reason for this is simple...Microsoft is in business to make money selling software and services. This is why it's no surprise that open source projects have greatly fewer bugs in the code...no pressure to get a product to market and make money off of it.
