Alright, we'll have to have hip waders with a little more of this..

Let me say it slowly, a weakness in IIS is not a weakness in Windows. Clear?

BZZZT! Wrong. You pork IIS, you own the whole box. That's why you can't separate Windoze from the apps. In a very real sense application weaknesses are a weakness in the OS. Because of the way user space interacts with administrative functions in most *nix environments, breaching the application is only the first hurdle. Then you have to start looking for a way to escalate your priveledges.

My patched Windows box has been on the net for years (since W2K) and I haven't been hit once.

That's a lie. You've had a naked Windows box connected directly to the internet with no NAT'ing, no proxy, firewall or boundry router and you're telling us it's never been penetrated? Bullsh--. Here's a clue for the other readers, don't try this at home with a machine you keep sensitive information on.

Me thinks that your "cooked within 30 mins" is pure, unadulterated FUD!

The actual documented average time is 23 minutes. I think he was just rounding up to the even half-hour and it's being generous.

You might want to be careful taking security advice NonZealot, or whichever hacker is running his unpenetrated Windows 2000 box today.
