I would compare it more as Windows = luxury sedan, Linux = economy SUV since I'm not aware of any studies that have shown secure Windows machines are significantly less secure than secure Linux machines though I do suspect that Linux would have a slight edge. In any case, as a home OS, a sedan is safe enough and I'd rather have a lot more luxury than a tiny bit more safety. Now if I was building a secure server, I would use a tank since neither Windows nor Linux are the best OSs out there for the paranoid server administrator.

Imagine that Yugo has times when its lights go out - for no reason - or the windshield washer starts up randomly or when you make a turn, the windows roll down.

These symptoms you talk about are only likely to happen after the Yugo has already been in 10 accidents. My Windows OS has been secured since day one and is stable every single day I use it.
