Your Linux sounds exactly like my Windows
I won't refute your claims in your little car rant but I will ask how Linux is any different than Windows:
1. Microsoft are completely absolved of any and all responsibility
This differs from RedHat/Suse/Mandrake/etc. how?
2. Further, the goods you buy are UN-USEABLE until you have paid out more money for, at the very least, 3rd party anti-virus.
You installed a 3rd party anti-virus on your Linux machine just like I installed one on my Windows machine. Both were free. How is this different?
3. You will probably need a firewall
A Linux user running without any perimeter defenses is as foolish as a Windows user doing this. Regardless, Windows comes bundled with an optional firewall just like Linux does and if you don't like them, there are plenty of 3rd party free and commercial ones out there. I'm still failing to see any differences.
4. You will probably need ... a substitute browser
I will replace "probably" with "definitely" but Firefox is free and you will need to install a browser on your Linux system too. Still no difference.

So we couldn't find any differences in what you needed to do to secure Windows or Linux and we couldn't find a difference in the price. Wow, your little car rant was sure convincing!!

There are 32 known viruses for Linux (100,000 for WIndows). I run my (free) BitDefender antivirus every month - and guess what? It has NEVER detected a virus.

I run my (free) AVG antivirus every month - and guess what? It has NEVER detected a virus. What conclusion can we come to? Absolutely none. It probably just means that you and I don't run FREE!!!!!!!!!! software that promises to enlarge certain parts of our bodies if we can click on the dancing elf.

Anyway, I'm failing to see how I spend any more time securing my Windows box than you spend on your Linux box. I installed anti-virus once and it keeps itself up to date, as I'm sure yours does. My auto-update functions behind the scenes and about once a month there are updates to install, likely the same frequency that Linux updates are available. I don't even use a firewall since I just plug into a NAT router but turning on the free firewall would take 10 seconds. Shall we tally?

Virus infections
Windows - 0
Linux - 0

Amount of time/money spent setting up anti-virus
Windows - negligible
Linux - negligible

Amount of time setting up firewall
Windows - 0 to negligible
Linux - 0 to negligible

Amount of time available for computing
Windows - 99.999%
Linux - 99.999% (although to be honest I've found that hunting for drivers takes FAR longer on Linux than Windows but we'll ignore that)

End result? No difference except that I personally prefer the selection of software available for Windows since I must admit that I dabble in games. happy

Windows, built from being a graphical shell around DOS on a single user, non-netweorked machine.

Hmm, while what you said perfectly describes Windows 3.X and partially describes Windows 9X/ME, you do realize that W2K and XP don't share any roots with those OSs, right? Funny we were just talking about you yesterday. Not directly but you certainly fit the Linux FUD flinger I described yesterday!
