Deliberate misdirection
MJB, are you being deliberately obtuse? You haven't refuted or even dented the truth and logic of what I said. I am highlighting Microsoft's business model by comparing it to the more normal "showroom" business model of the car world. YOU seem to be hotly defending the Microsoft model, in which the consumer pays up front for a product which is KNOWN to be insecure, unstable and to contain un-patched flaws which are not addressed until they've already been exploited. YOU are happy to sign an agreement with Microsoft, the vendor, before you can use the goods, and agree that the goods you are buying (Windows) do not have to be fit for purpose, they might damage or destroy your data, and if anything like that happens - Microsoft are completely absolved of any and all responsibility. Further, the goods you buy are UN-USEABLE until you have paid out more money for, at the very least, 3rd party anti-virus. You will probably need a firewall and a substitute browser for the one that has been welded into your goods. I doubt you would buy an inherently faulty, unsafe car which the manufacturers refuse to underwrite in any way at all, and especially a car that wont work until you've taken it to a 3rd party garage and paid them to bolt on some extras, to make your new car "safe" (until a NEW hazard is released. Having bought your substandard car and settled yourself onto a path whereby you have to pay out more 3rd party cash every single week, almost, would you be on a group discussion like this, bragging about it??

As to some of the other comments, well, I larffff. I've been a contract software engineer for 10 years, earening up to ?60k a year, and I never had to write a single line of Windows code in my life. Why? Business critical and safety critical systems - real computing - does not use Windows. End of story.

As for the crack about putting an unpatched Linux box on the net, again, I larrrfffff.
There are 32 known viruses for Linux (100,000 for WIndows). I run my (free) BitDefender antivirus every month - and guess what? It has NEVER detected a virus.

I suggest you learn something about the architecture of the different Operating Systems. In particular, learn why UNIX, now 30 years old, is secure by design, having been built from the ground up as a multi-user, networked OS, compared to Windows, built from being a graphical shell around DOS on a single user, non-netweorked machine. And that was before Microsoft integrated proprietary Microsoft applications with the low level Windows functionality, thereby enabling - FOREVER - the easy penetration of low level services by malware through the application layer.

Of course you have a right to squander your cash on shoddy products sold by monopolies who do not give a rats ass about their end users. Some of us have evolved beyond being food for predators ....
