If you put an unpatched Windows machine on the wire without AV and Spyware protection, it will pick up a number of malware apps.

This is true of all consumer OSs out there today. Unpatched, unsecured OSX and Linux machines will also get infected.

Lesson learned: put the AV on BEFORE connecting to the network, then wire it up and update definitions.

If you enabled the software firewall (or better yet, connected through a hardware NAT router/firewall) before connecting to the Internet you would be far safer than installing just NAV. Not allowing anyone to connect to your machine is a better defense than letting everyone in and then deciding who is good and who is bad.
