Car vs. OS, as has been pointed out in these forums before, is not always a valid comparison. For example, no one sues Chevy because they you can't by a Silverado without a Chevy transmission. Also, you can't download a new airbag.

In other words, there is no Real Networks of the automobile industry, and the reason for that is that the barriers to market entry are considerably higher in a line of business such as transmission manufacturing. What does it take to outfit a start-up software house? A couple of PC's retrofitted with compilers.
