battleshp is a good analogy
in fact, when my linux server got hacked (no virus it was actually hacked by a person) i found a script in my cron jobs that had an email address on yahoo. i added the name to my yahoo messenger and about a month later they signed on. i asked about the hack and after he looked me up in his hacker book, he complained that the script didnt work (which i knew because until i found out what it was i got emails from cron explaining how i was missing a library so a certain program couldnt run. so it sent him a blank email every day instead of one with passwords and usernames. i asked him how he got in... it was with a program called openwebmail. since i decided it wasnt much use to me, i never patched it. but i was stupid and didnt remove it. ive learned from that mistake and now i either patch regularly or remove what im not using. and i test stuff on a machine that has no openings to the outside. so now its like playing battleship but im not saying if you hit or miss :P
