But all things being equal you have to understand how people work in your environment. I am lucky people do listen but you also have to balance things with the requirements if you can fit it in and still keep your uptimes then you will always have success.

I have also found that a lot of communication helps even if they are not tech savvy, you also have to know what you want to achieve with the project to be successfull. Strip it down to what you really need to achieve anything else that is achieved after that makes you look like a expert.

Sometimes a little comment like, "I am having this problem with the software. I am looking into it and the other bits are working." to a manager is worth more than a status report in an e-mail as that can quite easily been forgotten. Informal discussion letting the bosses know what you have achieved and are having problems with gives them insight into your job without too much detail.

At least you are indicating that they are still important. although emails are good sometimes a off the cuff comment that gives them an idea what you are doing gets you a lot of leeway.
