Windows is NOT the #1 OS!
It's only the #1 DESKTOP OS. There's more out there than desktops. In most other markets, Windows is an also-ran at best.

Web servers and other Internet servers are still very largely Unix (including Linux and Mac OS X) running Apache, not Windows running IIS.

Databases servers are still more Oracle and SyBase and DB2 than Microsoft SQL Server.

In Beowulf cluster supercomputers, Windows hardly even makes a showing among the top systems. Apple has at least two in the Top 20 last time I checked, and theirs are #1 in both computational power per number of CPUs, and computational power per price. #1 over ANYTHING else, including AMD Opterons and custom systems! Even the ones that use Windows-compatible CPUs (Opterons, Xeons) are more likely to be running Solaris or some other industrial-strength Unix than Windows.

And finally, there is THE largest market out there -- FAR larger than desktops and servers combined! It's one most people don't think about, but nearly everyone in the first and second world nations has at least one copy of the #1 OS in this market, and usually more.

I refer to embedded systems -- OSes on ROM chips, running everything from automobile engines to VCRs to microwave ovens to cell phones to electronic musical keyboards to industrial robots, etc. etc. etc. The #1 OS for this market, VxWorks by Wind River, has an installed base that outnumbers Windows in ALL of its forms, in ALL of its markets, COMBINED, by over TEN-FOLD! Microsoft has tried to make inroads into this super-lucrative market with Windows NT Embedded, Windows XP Embedded, etc., to no avail (who wants to have to use ROMs that are megabytes in size where kilobytes would do for VxWorks, QNX RTOS, etc.?).

Yet, in every market that Windows has a significant presence in, it is always the most vulnerable and often-hacked OS.

So much for the hypothesis that Windows is only attacked more because of its popularity.
