Seems to me
These are but pesky little bugs, that require dumb users to do their thing. Problem is - dumb users are legion, and that ain't about to change for at least a generation or so.

OTOH There are heuristics, a big cake where we have just nibbled at the corner like mice. As long as AV makers rely on signatures to catch the pesky stuff they will always be half a step behind or worse.

IMHO ESET has the right idea: Go for heuristics and build a fast app to use them effectively. Still a lot to do though, false positives are still a problem even though not as big a problem as they have been. It should be possible to avoid false positives altogether.

Of course using heuristics effectively require AV programmers to actually be able to program fast apps. Time to dust off those assembler skills, or at least hire smart cookies that have skills in optimizing software for small footprints and fast action. I used NAV when servicing the puter of a friend, almost fell asleep.
