Yep! I know those people!
"But it said 'I Love you' and I recognized the name!"

"I wasn't using that file and I needed the drive space."

"Doesn't 'format' set it up for better printing?"

"Why should I copy it onto a disk? It's already on the hard drive." (This said just before a major drive crash where all the data was lost. The young lady was told to back up her important material because the drive was already showing signs of failing.)

"It didn't come up so I tried it again." (resulting in a full-color, 600-pg report being sent to the office printer 15 times and locking up the entire system).

Shall I go on? I actually got a call this morning from a mid-level manager who was trying to fill in a spreadsheet. No matter how hard he tried, the numbers wouldn't fill in. He had his assistant call me to fix it. The problem? His numlock key was off...

IT spends more time dealing with cr@p like this than they ever do taking care of major crashes because the major systems are maintained properly. I know my network harware infrastructure is sound because I work at it. I cannot guarantee, however, that Ms. Peeceekill won't click on the latest fake Microsoft patch and trash the software.

(BTW-why aren't our backups off-site? Money! No manager wants to spend the little bit it would take to preserve the materials elsewhere. I have suggested that I simply take the newest tape home each week so that if something DID happen, at least that would be safe. I was laughed at.)
