What?
"When was the last time YOUR company started a new software project from scratch and was finished and released in 30 days?"

Since when is a PATCH a totally new software project? Ya mean these tyros at MS gotta approach every single PATCH from GROUND ZERO? The problem, then, isn't with the zillion or so lines of code in Windows, but with a bloated, bureaucratic office environment in Redmond.

"so would you rather BIT*H about it for 30 days, or get a nice shiny patch every 30 days?"

I have a couple of clients who almost went out of business as a result of one of the last big virus infections. When it's MY and THEIR livlihoods I'll BIT*H all I want, thank you. Especially when I'm not altogether convinced that their problem is NOT sufficient time to get it right in the first place.

"We are NOT talking about OSS here - these are proprietary vendors. They have limited staff on hand"

Uh huh, yep, and you just try to use that excuse on a customer of yours right after you've said "I'm sorry, Fred, but the data is just ... gone." Their staffing is not MY problem! So, your argument is "Ooo, poor Willy Gates, maybe he wouldn't make as many BILLIONS this year if he had to hire a couple more programmers." Doesn't fly with me.
