And of course, time to market makes the code-and-fix methodology a very compelling model. It only bites you in the a** if you end up with a product with staying power, one that is subjected to a progression of patches and upgrades. It also causes delays in follow-on products - sound familiar?

My organization has more than once been required to cut corners to roll out software in support of an urgent mission need - it comes with the territory. But we would never commit to long term production without a reengineering effort in order to achieve sustainability. Why? If for no other reason, our customers can go elsewhere.
