Let's give MS a break
I don't know anyone who thinks password protecting a MS Office file gives the data any real security.

There have been tools available to crack password protected MS files as long as I can remember. And these tools are used, more often than not, to access files after the password has been forgotten, or the employee who created them quit.

Use the MS file password to keep out the curious, use GNUPG or PGP to protect sensive data.

IMO, if the MS encryption were any stronger, there would probably been many hundreds of thousands of inaccessable MS documents around, due to the many morons that use the feature then immediately forget the password.
