Correction on incorrect correction
Since there is NO registry in *NIX, you don't have to "update" anything with root permission when installing software.
1. Who said that spyware needs to be installed with root permission? If the user has permission to install software, he has permission to install software. It isn't like spyware is magical, it is just like any other software. Either you can install software in which case you can install spyware, or you can't. This isn't a technical issue.

2. Who said that you needed admin privileges to install Windows software? Before Firefox 1.0, I installed it as a regular user and it ran without a complaint. Firefox doesn't use the registry so your argument about *NIX being more secure because it doesn't have a registry is invalid. Programmatic usage of the registry is 100% optional.

You aren't safe from spyware even if you never install anything as root/admin. I'll reiterate, if a user can install software, they can install spyware. End of story.

The installed software will run with the privilege level of the user and not as root.
I fail to see how this is different than the way it works in Windows. Whether or not I install an application as a regular user or as admin, I always run the installed software with the privilege of the user, not as admin. *NIX and Windows work exactly the same in this regard. I think you need to brush up on how Windows works. There have been a lot of changes since W9X.
