Correct on correction
I have been part of organizations that do lock down Windows desktops so that end users can not install software. End users hated it but it was effective in reducing the instances of rogue installations. This is an excellent point and also why I like both Linux and Windows desktops since we do NOT give end users root or admin authority. If only more Windows shops would follow this approach then there would less problems overall. However, the home user paradigm is a more difficult nut to crack since they naturally want and likely will be root or admin and will not build plain old user accounts. Part of this is education, but the model needs to be made clearer to end users. At the end of the day though, all the potential security recommendations and tools we have will make no difference unless people use them consistently.
