Correction on a couple points
My Linux boxes don't slow down over time.
Neither do my Windows boxes. That has more to do with the user than the OS.

No increase in lag while 50,000 applications startup at boot.
Linux can start up 50,000 applications with no lag? Doubtful. Regardless, if a user has installed 50,000 applications to run on startup, this is a user problem, not an OS problem.

It's astonishing to me that some people have just come to accept reinstalling the software every so often as the price of using Windows.
What am I doing wrong then? I must not be experiencing the true joys of running Windows because since leaving the W9X era, I don't think I've had to reinstall an application to get it working.

And it never bothers them to pay for an antivirus subscription on top of what they paid for the OS.
There are great, free anti-virus tools. That, plus a little common sense goes a long way. Again, it boils down to users, not the OS.

The number one thing a Windows user can do to avoid ANY of this is to install and use Firefox. Spyware installation comes in 2 forms: drive-by and piggybacked. Avoid drive-by by avoiding IE. Avoiding piggybacked spyware is trickier but if the software has the words FREE!!!!!! anywhere in its documentation, it probably isn't. Oh, and if there were enough home Linux users out there to make it worthwhile, Linux absolutely cannot be made immune to piggybacked spyware without taking away a user's ability to install software... a step also possible with Windows.
