The sky is falling -- NOT
Note that the most dire predictions in the piece are from the mouthpieces of companies who sell adware/spyware removal tools. What would you expect them to say?

This does not mean there is not a problem. But the approach appears to be more band-aids. The root of the problem is ActiveX, poorly designed security in the Windows operating system that allows IE to elevate scripts rights to System and people who download things for free without caring about the consequences and deceptive advertisers. One nifty solution will not answer all these issues.

MS will soon sell a products that removes spyware from your windows systems. Since Software Assurance has been such a bust they need new ways to keep the revenue stream flowing. So I understand that MS is now going to continue sell flawed operating systems and then will sell you a way to fix the problems -- of course, they could bundle it for awhile and drive out competition as they have in media players, web browsers etc... In the meantime, the independent little guys have to hype the problem in order to withstand the onslaught from the monopolist.

One way to avoid this is to use products that do not have the problems that the Windows systems appear to have. If you are truly wasting bandwidth, end users time and support resources then is Windows truly lowering your costs? Or are the support costs eating you alive? It is a fair question and not everyone will have the same answer. I found that in my organization that the higher costs of supporting Windows everywhere was not the best price/performance for us. So now we use standards based and some open source products in our server pool. We have added Apple and Linux desktops, our costs overall are dropping and we have less turmoil. We still have MS SQL servers, they work great and we can secure them. We threw Exchange away because it FAILED to meet our needs and was overpriced for the performance it delivered. We stil have some Windows desktops but they are now viewed as the bottom of the barrel in both quality and ease of use. We attacked the cuase of the problem rather than use band-aids.
