while i partially agree...
i dont want to crawl through cielings wiring a house for ethernet so they can have a pc in every room. i mean a wireless laptop with wep enabled is ok for the trip to the bathroom so they can download their "reading materials". or run a pvc tube outside to hook up a remote office or something.

in my personal case, i have 2 linux boxes and 2 windows boxes for servers and games respectively. then in the living room about 150 feet of wire away, i have a windows box for my fiancees mom to use while watching the kids (i dont need her nosing around my windows box and find my pr0n, right? :P

so sometimes a wireless lan is helpful. but i agree not necessary.
