My experience was similar
My network does not broadcast it's SSID, used WEP, runs a pre-loaded firewall, and I'm running WPA. Each system connected to my network also runs a SW firewall seperate from the router. Each is reletively easy to set up. Not only that, but My father has the same setup. He is not as technical as I am, but it took little effort on his part to set it up. It did require a phone call to me though for the obligitory "do I need to enable xxxxxx?" conversation. I think that is the real problem. Too many people do not know what these things are or why they need them.

In the end, I feel as good about my security as I do about my locked car in a mall parking lot. Is it proof against theft, no, but it is probably easier for the thief to find one already unlocked than to break into mine and disable the security system. Sometimes, just increasing the effort level to exploit the system is enough to lower your risk.

Maybe when everyone else gets educated, I'll have to change things.
