Are you reading the same article as I am ?
I have to say I disageed with the whole notion or the noble assumption that MANY-MANY OSS folks keep pushing. Such believe lead to your statement of (and I quote):

"Also I think the fact
that the community itself tests and brings to light these issues is
a GOOD and positive thing that will benefit all"

In this case, according to the report, the company discovered the flaw back in JUNE and sent it out to THEIR customers ONLY and didn't notify Apple. Now, granted, the company is NOT part of the OSS. But let me ask you. Where is the 'community itself tests' that brings this flaw out ? If this company didn't present this in a seminar, I doubt that anyone outside of the company and its customers would know. So what 'GOOD' and 'positive' benefits are there ?

The fact is that OSS folks and their community only tests those features/functions that are important or of interests to them. Otherwise, wouldn't one would think that by now, all the flaws in any of these OSS should all be discovered ? Instead, it appears that as Linux (and other OSS projects) get more usage, more security companies became interests and find more problems with them. Is it NOT back to the having to have a 'PAID' company to audit/monitor the code ??? So, what's the difference between them and Windows other than there are probably a lot more 'PAID' ppl working for these companies whose jobs are to discover these faults in Windows and make money from there.

The fact is that in reality, there really isn't that much difference in regard to software regardless of whether it's closed or open source. All software, as long as it is written by a human, will contain some sort of flaws and some of these flaws would be security related.

I just hoped that these OSS folks would stop saying that theirs are BETTER because it's more secured or that more ppl are discovering and fixing the errors before they're wide spread. Instead, compete on other terms !
