Yes, this is possible and no it's not Microsoft's fault. They were running an old kernel. You see Microsoft not patching their servers all the time. This was the same kind of mistake, except, one server was not patched. Not all. I'm sure it won't happen for quite a while again, as they will be careful choosing to upgrade or not when a new kernel comes out (e.g. vital bug fixes come out, they upgrade after thoroughly testing).

The 2.6 kernel is looking great and is super fast compared to 2.4. I'm using it now (test11 is the latest right now). I suggest trying it, ALSA is built-in and it's very good.
