Vulnerable Linux vs. Multi-Billion $$$ MS Antics
Quote from another article:

``..He cited estimates by Business Week that financial damage this year from bugs like the Blaster worm and the SoBig.F e-mail virus, which crashed systems and disrupted Internet traffic around the world, would total some $13 billion.

The cost of protecting networks against such cyberattacks was put at $3.8 billion. ''

MS windows is supposed to be a 'professional' platform that is relied upon by organizations and individuals to carry out business or personal tasks. BIllions of $$$ and millions of man-hourss have been invested for its development. Even after ~20 years in evolution (DOS included) it can still wreak a havoc to golobal networking, business and personal systems.

What is the cost of the compromise of a few servers of the 'hobbyist' linux? They weren't even capable to corrupt the basic function of these servers, due to data mirroring and strict monitoring procedures of the sanity of the system. As per the announcement they discovered that something had gone wrong in ONE hour.

Imagine some MS windows boxes entrusted with the task of allowing 1000s of developers exchange code on a global scale. With the current state of the windows platform the exlpoit would have reached the Moon.

How much is the monetary cost of the exploit? It is only service unavailability but no data destruction.

At the same time it is importand to find out what sequence of steps allowed this individual(s) to acquire privilleged access.

For people who are really interested in getting first hand and accurate accounts of the various security issue the CERT site:

http://www.cert.org/nav/index_red.html

is a good starting point.
