Linux being hacked
Whoever hacked the Gentoo system must have had knowledge of the vulnerability, my guess - it is the same group who tried to get access to the Debian servers. Maybe they had pot luck at them to see if it worked. The big thing is that they had to work at it to do it (20 people where connected at the same time, trying to hide in the numbers). This is not a script kiddie that did this. This is a concerted effort to compromise Linux. My question remains - what is their purpose for this (spammers, virus writers etc)?

The vulnerability will be fixed soon and other distro's will know about it. Everyone will benefit from the flaw being known and fixing it.
