Alternatives abound, not really dropping
Lots of folks left Kazaa because of the monitoring, not to mention all the spyware and virii that came with it. But they haven't stopped downloading. Just because one is getting used less does NOT mean that other P2P usage has dropped... There are so many other ways to get the goods if one really wants them, none of which require Kazaa or even P2P software.

By using the "drop in usage" example, one could just as easily say the same thing for any other object or service in the world. For example: the big three network channels have seen a large drop in viewers. By the RIAA argument, that means that TV watching in general has dropped-a fallacy. The truth is that viewers are switching to cable channels for their viewing and are still watching TV, just in a different fashion. "Friends" is on TV tonight opposite "Survivor." If I watch the first, will I miss the second? Not if I tape it to watch later-a "fair use" practice, by the way.

See, that's what happens with those grand, sweeping statements that are supposed to scare us into compliance. They sound good until you look at the rest of the story.
