But what do they mean?
In the first place, Kazaa had problems with spyware and viruses. The news reports indicated RIAA was watching. I'm not surprised that usage has been changing. But are people going to another file sharing network or using alternate software on Kazaa or some other alternative?

Even RIAA is claiming success only in getting people to realize they can be attacked. And under a remarkable law which makes private companies less subject to control than law enforcement agencies.

Besides, what is the goal of RIAA's campaign? To make more money selling music. Their profits did increase recently, though if you can't make money with a new version of a Beatles album, might as well quit.
Nope, they've attacked their customers viciously and publicly. To the extent people pay attention, this campaign only loses. Impossible to win.

And the worst hypocrisy was the RIAA chief saying how glad he was about the success of online music stores. If that were true, the RIAA member companies wouldn't be trying to kill them off by charging such high licensing fees that even Apple, the most successful, can't make a profit.

The RIAA member companies have obviously decided that they are in a life and death battle to force their best customers to stop using the internet to acquire music under any circumstances, legal or illegal.
In that case, the mergers in the industry will continue awhile longer, until all the record companies are bought by retailers which have decided not to be angry and stupid. The publicizing and managing of musicians will become a separate industry.

We're watching an industry self-destruct in a fit of pique.
