You're Almost There
I've been using a highly customized BartPE for months, but don't use it to fix most spyware infestations. Primarily, Ad-Aware (or any of the other tools) can't access and clean the registry of the machine to be cleaned. My BartPE CD is the disc of last resort bec at that point, the infested PC must be so corrupt that it's non-functional in either Safe or Normal mode. I do agree that it seems that very few, so-called PC Pros are aware of BartPE.

I use Ad-Aware SE Personal, followed by SpyBot, then a few passes w/ HijaakThis. Experience (and a recent article on the eWeek website) reveals that no spyware scanner picks up everything. This web page (http://www.windowsecurity.com/articles/Spyware-Evolving.html) is a helpful article on the subj. HiJaakThis is great bec it reveals those programs that persistently insert themselves into the Registry. They CAN be removed in Safe mode, but only w/ a tool like HT, to reveal their presence, wher I usu delete them manually. The above works in all but 5% of all cases. The exceptions are those PCs that have been profoundly corrupted at the network level. (Yes, I also know about NETSH to reload the TCP stack, but it almost never fixes the types of network stack failures I routinely encounter.)
