Bravo
I completely connected with the Christmas/Holiday experience. My in-laws have even invited their friend over to my house to have me fix their computers.

Spyware sucks it that simple. Linux and Unix are good but they are not bullet proof. We've hacked both for various reasons when needed. If they had the market share that MS Windows does there would be spyware for them too.

There is no reason that you should be able to write a bootable utility to zap this stuff. The only issue that might stand in the way is a secure NTFS. The shared database sounds like an excellent public service. It would make anti malware vendors compete on the strenght of their software instead of dependence on their database. Of course this probably won't make them more money. Microsoft would probably be hesitant to publisize a list of all know exploits. Since that just lend creedance to the all your security issues will go away if you move to Linux/Unix arguement people are so fond of making.
