The melting cycle
Yes, everything starts out spread out - many suppliers with similar products. Then comes the consolodation phase as the numbers of companies are whittled down. In the end, you get one big company (like M$) - but then you have violated a Murphy's law that states that single points of failure will be exploited - which is what happened to M$.
