This has been going on for a while now and getting worse.
We sent out a newsletter to our customers and other interested parties back in September about this problem:

http://www.nsclean.com/nws-spam.html

And since then, it HAS been getting more severe. People unfortunately depend on their antiviruses and their firewalls and part of the problem is so many of these are designed to "firewall bypass" (commonly called "FWB's") by piggybacking and injected DLL into a trusted application such as Internet Explorer or other network-permitted progran. And where they are discovered by antivirus or anti-"spyware" programs, you'll get that "cannot remove" message so commonly seen with these.

We make BOClean, which has been around since 1997, and was designed to deal with "RATs" and other classes of trojans. Today, the spammers themselves are actually hiring the "ne'er-do-wells" that used to write the classic trojans and embedding these "tools" in freeware as well as exploiting known (often unpatched) holes in Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in order to bury these in people's machines.

Once cannot underestimate the cleverness of these people. They *do* get past antiviruses with ease, they *do* get past firewalls. We're not the ONLY company in the antitrojan "business" but we've been around since the beginning of this plague. The problem IS serious, and the adversary quite clever at what they do. They succeed frequently, and they seek out those who have "broadband." But they also break into corporate and government computers with almost equal ease.
