Oh Yeah
You've got this one right, SO. A stable, open, global Internet INFRASTRUCTURE needs to be based on standard protocols and free of proprietary aberrations like VeriSign's SiteFinder. I liked Scott Bradners's description of Verisign's action as "Internet vandalism" as opposed to the "service" they claim to be offering. (Network World, 10/13/03, p.28) Seems to me that forcing one to take a service they don't want is called extortion in some circles. I guess ICANN will figure out how to set this all straight.

It's been an interesting year. SCO is trying to hijack Linux and VeriSign is trying to hijack the Internet. Should make interesting reading for a while. One would hope that reason prevails, although recent legislative and judicial actions don't offer much justification for optimism. As a business ethicist and teacher of strategic management of technology, I'll sure have plenty of "black hat" classroom fodder for a while.
