Outsourcing, again??!!?
I thought I'd heard the lot about outsourcing to countries unmentionable (poor quality, bad communication, etc., etc.), but this is really something new.
The quote from Ponemon's report that in "places like India or Latin America, where they are paid far less than counterparts in the U.S., stealing information and selling it can seem like (just) another source of revenue." smacks of just too much imagination, and poor research.
The reason why these unfortunate counterparts agree to do the work for less is because the cost of living in these parts is also a lot less. Duh.
So in effect they're being paid pretty high salaries, compared to their counterparts in America. To say that they would so naturally need to supplement their meagre income is really a pointless jab.
It's also a moot question as to why, unless someone is so obsessed with breaking rules, an employee in India or Latin America would steal something like American SSN numbers (or American personal information). They're really worthless in these places.
In my experience, most centers that do outsourced work have contracts that specify just how much security is needed, and that's enforced pretty tightly: all of which actually, to take the other view, makes outsourced work somewhat safer.
