Securing data from the threat within
The problem with how to secure data without turning the company into a private-police state is one that can never be fully resolved to the satisfaction of all. You CAN have a highly-secure work environment?but the problem of keeping people from getting highly pissed-off because they are made to feel like prisoners or suspects is going to be greater as the level of security increases?especially if keystroke loggers and other spyware is used to keep tabs on everyone.

CCTV camera systems spying on every workstation and desk, bugs recording every spoken word?on or off of the telephones?in other words, the ideal police state?will TOTALLY piss off almost everyone.

The monumental task is to create a level of security that can be considered reasonably adequate without alienating and pissing off the workforce. And one other thing?any and all security measures must be enforced with TOTAL IMPARTIALITY! No special perks for the CEO?s and other corporate brass. They must be held to higher standards than the lower-level staffers. ?Do as I say, not as I do.? Just won?t cut it anymore.

Once Stalin or Lenin had a dissident brought before him, and gloating, charged him with ?crimes?. The dissident demanded to be referred to as ?under investigation? rather than ?the accused?, whereupon the Communist bigshot hauled him to a window of his office and pointed at the passersby. ?THEY are ?under investigation,? he told the dissident. ?YOU are ?the accused?.

Do we want a Communist/Nazi KGB/Gestapo-dominated workplace? I DON?T!
