Ugh, tell me about it...
I'm a fairly new employee at a university and it's my first job in the academic area. I'm still trying to adjust to the fact that we "have" to let people (students, visiting professors etc.) plug unprotected, out-of-date computers into our network. Even more incredible to me is that we don't have a policy requiring AV software on outside machines that plug into our network - instead, we offer a discount on a package, but it't not required (meaning that if we find an infected machine, there isn't much we can do about it except ask them nicely to take it off the network).

The havoc that this can wreak on a network is incredible. A few weeks ago, someone had to come in early on a Saturday b/c a grad student plugged in their laptop and immediately flooded the network so badly with traffic that just about everything else shut down. We couldn't do anything to the student's machine since it belonged to her employer and she wouldn't let us touch it other than to run some anti-spyware utilities. The only solution was to put that classroom on their own dedicated DSL connection so they could still get out onto the internet without killing everything else.

In some ways, these are the worst imaginable end-users I've had to deal with. Ugh..
