It's not so much pain as anxiety
And, even being an MVP, I have no insight into the Longhorn product since I am an Office (Outlook) MVP, not an OS or Server technology MVP.

That team may be sharing information with the Windows MVPs but they are not talking to me. Not that I would be interested overly much since my expertise is in Office products, not the supporting OS. I only have so much time in my life and understanding .dlls and shell issues is pretty low on my list.

AS for the rest of your assertions that the third party problems are the fault of Microsoft, that is not always the truth. Often, when Microsoft changes APIs and notifies third parties that they have changed, third parties often take their own sweet time updating their software to work with the latest APIs. Look at Symantec WinFax - it has not worked properly since Outlook 2000 as Symantec made a conscious decision to stop development on Winfax except for a couple of minor updates. Microsoft supplied them with information to interoperate with Outlook 2002 and 2003 but they chose to not make the programming investment. Thus, WinFax is broken in Outlook 2002/2003 - is this Microsoft's fault or the third party vendor?

Just keeping the discussion going.
