"Crackers (not hackers) are going to keep going after IE because it is so easy to crack and there are so many different ways to crack it they will neither be seriously challenged nor bored."

Anyone who has been paying attention the past couple of years has seen the real threat moving from "easy to crack" flaws to "user behavior" (e.g., phishing scams). I frankly don't know how to stop someone from downloading malware, but I do know that it's about as easy to do with FireFox as with IE. I would venture to guess that the ratio of people who have been harmed by IE flaws versus the number who have downloaded malware (consciously, albeit unintentionally) is a pretty small number. In the end, the security improvements touted by the open source crowd may just be lost in the haze of user ignorance.
