Comparing Apples with...(oranges?) other computers
My point is general. All computers crash although some crash more than others. Even though they crash, if good software is available, good work may still be done on any adequate computer. I often hear "Macs don't crash" from some rabid Mac users. I do hear similar claims from users of other types. I also hear very sensible discussions of the relative merits of different hardware and software from people who prefer Macintosh, but know how to use other gear. These latter people Even use other types of hardware on a regular basis for tasks that are more difficult or expensive on Macs. Autocad and Fortran compilers are good examples here.

Your question is very good. Both the school graphics lab and I had recently upgraded to Photoshop 7 from 6. Their Macs, recent, but not the latest.. (I do not know the hardware designation) were using OS9. There were about 20 of them on a network and they were managed by a school employee. Everyone in the Graphics department seemed hard-over in thinking that good graphics work could only be done on Macs.

I did my homework at home and would bring it in to class on a CD and open and save it in Photoshop so that the PC signatures were replaced by the Mac ones.

About halfway through the course, I upgraded my home computer (Athlon XP 2400+ with 512 Meg memory and three physical hard disks) to Windows XP professional from Windows 98. The lab was in the process of upgrading to OSX when the course finished.

I was hearing lots of griping about having to upgrade. I think that the big problem was caused when they saw the terminal window in OSX and were apprehensive about having to type stuff instead of clicking. The manager said, "If we had wanted PC's, we would have bought PC's."

Some of my competent Mac-preferring friends said, "That's crazy, OSX is great."

I do use Macs and like some of the features. I even liked the Apple II. My sister asked me to set up a system on her Apple II to help her manage her schedule for her business. I was very impressed by the data base in Appleworks.

I used the GIMP (Photoshop attempt)under LINUX, but abandoned it because of my difficulty with peripheral drivers.

Some of my colleagues also used Amegas for war simulation modelling (Not gaming)and they did some very impressive stuff.

So, I ask again, WAZZADIF?

I don't think you were asking about the vehicles, but just in case... my wife's Olds is an anniversary model 88. I drive a 1987 Ford F150. The computer chips in both vehicles are unmodified. Both of us have experienced expensive hardware problems and are thinking of upgrading.

I hope that this is sufficient detail.

If not, I will try harder if you ask.
