- Companies wishing to setup their own mail servers...
-
should be required to have a certain level of skill needed to manage the server so their won't be an unedning source of open relay mail servers for spammers to use. 90% of spam which my customers receive thru my mail server is sent from open relay servers. The administrators of these servers have no business having a server. They are so oblivious on how to manage a mail server that they don't even know they are being used. Everyone should have the right to setup up Intrernet services BUT only if they are willing to take on the responsibility to become a professional at what they do. Just because one can install the software for the server makes them think they are an IT professional. This idea only further shows how oblivious they are in regards to what a true IT professional must undertake to get to a position of competency. I doubt most even know what an open relay server is, let alone know they are one themselves and what they need to do to remedy the problem. Shutting down these idiot maintained servers will immediately stop 90% of the unwanted e-mails.
If spammers are forced to setup their own mail servers, hiding would be nearly impossible and we could trully begin cleaning up the Internet.
In all but rare instances, a mail server simply needs to compare the domain portion od the senders e-mail address against the domain of the mail server to see if mail is bogus. Sometimes when away from ones network, a user is forced to use a server whose domain may be different than their e-mail address. But this is because service providers have chosen to take a lazy approach to managing their servers by requiring local network access to use the server. SMTP logon would remedy their need to do so. In my opinion, however, these service providers probably don't have the skill necessary to give the customers a quality service anyway and an alternative service provider should be sought. Bell is the worst in this instance.
And what is great is we have everything needed already. We don't need new laws. And the soon to be government regulations to achieve this. We simply need professionals providing the services on the Internet and not lazy idiots like so many today.
I work hard to manage my services and strive to obtain the knowledge and skill required. It's hard work. I also scan my logs very frequently to make sure I don't contribute to the problem. I find it very offensive for someone to think they can setup a service without having to do their homework. Anyone can setup a mail server. But to do it without contributing to the current woes everyone is complaining about requires skill. People hosting open relay servers are worse than the spammers who exploit their idiocy.
Cleaning up the Internet would be very simple and easy if everyone did their part. The alternative - government regulation - will simply be bad for everyone, except the spammers who will thumb their nose at such.
The internt is being trashed with the help of Internet users. And Internet users are the only viable solution to clean it up. - Posted by: bjbrock Posted on: 12/24/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
