I like product activation. It has served as wonderful motivation to explore new alternatives to applications I use every day. Product Activation is the reason I chose to take a look at Mandrake Linux (and now run it at home as my primary desktop with Open Office.org 1.1). It's also the reason that on my Windows 2000 system that I no longer use anything from Symantec, why I switched to an open source money management application instead of Quicken, and why I haven't upgraded my Adobe Photoshop to the new Creative Suite.
If it weren't for Microsoft, Intuit, and Symantec, and Adobe trying so hard to treat me like a criminal up front, I would never have discovered great alternatives to their applications.
Product Activation, as I understand it, was designed to prevent casual copying of software so that the distributor could make more money on those pesky home users who own more than one computer.
Well, I *personally* own 4. And I legitimately own *per seat* licenses for all of the programs I use. Looks like they lost future licensing from me.
I wonder if the cost of marketing and end-user support required to support Product Activation (and make up for the lost good-will in the process) overrides the *perceived* benefit they think it has over piracy. - Posted by: acousticiris Posted on: 12/02/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
