Sometimes if you use a branded version of IE, such as one provided by your local ISP, the throbber (flag or globe) will be a corporate logo or something. There are several utilities that will let you change/remove the throbber. TweakUI is my favorite, but there are non-proggie ways of doing it: visit http://www.virtualplastic.net/html/logo_thr.html to learn how to do it through the registry. But I would still run a resident protection like Spybot, and install and keep updated progs such as Spyware Blaster and AdAware SE.
