Re: CoolWebSearch dangers
I use Ad-aware SE from http://www.lavasoft.de
it is free and catches many instances of spyware/adware/malware.

I use a free (donations gratefully accepted) spyware/adware/malware app called SpyBot S&D as well as Spyware Blaster, which compliments SpyBot S&D.

SpyBot S&D will search for the many variants of Cool WWW Search, repair & immunize most all instances of spyware/adware/malware. There are some that get by or re-appear after reboot.

There are some very nasty spyware/malware that contains its own install engines and can get by your firewall or AV undetected.
I had problems with one called SearchForIt.zip. I did finally get rid of it though & I think that it came from a free ripper/encoder called dbPowerAmp. I'm not sure if SearchForIt was DLed with dbPowerAmp or not. Just be careful with free software & be sure to read the EULA (End User Licencing Agreement) to be sure that the s/w you're DLing doesn't DL spyware, etc with it.

If you DL SpyBot S&D from http://www.security.kolla.de
Be sure to search for and apply all updates before scanning. Same for Ad-aware SE and Spyware Blaster.

Also, be sure to use the regular mode of SpyBot S&D if you're not an advanced user.
