This of course assumes that Microsoft didn't know about the rights ownership in the first place.
I seriously doubt that the person who wrote this article was in any of the meetings, negotiations, etc., that were involved in this purchase. Thus, what they write about may have been, and probably was, known about for quite some time by all parties involved.
