What's left for 3rd party developers?
don't get me wrong - i'm no fan of ad/spy/malware, but take a step back - windows now includes a firewall, pop-up blocker, cd burning, instant messaging, Zip utility, and now a/s/m/ware filter - out of the box. So far, they've made boxed windows a direct competitor for panicware, lavasoft, Roxio, cerulean studios, winzip, and zone labs. will longhorn include virus scanning and a DVD decoder and make Symantec and Intervideo stock go down? How much more will they include?

I'm an IT major. I fix computers to pay for it. When I walk into someone's house to fix theoir computer, I figure that if I do my job right, they won't be calling me again to fix the same problem. I tell them what they can do to aviod having the problem again. I don't expect every one of my clients to be MCSE certified, but running ad-aware once a month shouldn't be too much to ask. Keeping their virus scanner up to date shouldn't be too much. those with cable and DSL have NO excuse for having month-old virus definitions.

As an added bonus, what functionality will they take out of their OS to protect the clueless? on outlook 2003 they made it impossible for me to send an e-mail with a .exe attachment with no direct workaround. I have to ZIP my EXE's to send them because a bunch of people haven't gotten the idea - if you aren't expecting it, don't run it! it's not differential mathematics here! then again, it's such as these that will put me through college...
