and a good article.

However, I would say that your bank example was not completely accurate.
If one is allowed through the bank's front door; behaves impeccably for the sake of the cameras; and is allowed into the vault, say, in order to access his own safe deposit box - he is still not allowed to pilfer other safe deposit boxes. He is allowed access only to his own box; he can access the vault only for that purpose. Even though he has a box, he still can't walk into the vault for any other purpose other than his own box, say to count how many boxes there are.

Defense in depth doesn't mean just a series of concentric, "parallel" circles of defense: you get through one, and you're free till the next; rather it is better to have "deep" defense, one that follows you - and defends you and from you - every step of the way.
