I have another take on all this.
Perhaps there are some people over at MS who are really smart and are not as meglomaniacal as Gates and chronies. Maybe some of these smart people were not able to "take the money and run" like many from the MS lawless "wild west" days. The company's reputation has been taking a constant beating for some time now with no real end in sight.

These smart people realized that those still working there would eventually regret it if the company did not act differently and make some real concessions.
One of these concessions might have been purposely opening the door for other browsers by not updating internet explorer. Ms knows that IE has done all it can for them and the amount of effort required just to maintain the status quo is just not worth it. MS has plans for a vast world market out there that IE could never dominate or even play a major role in.

We know that Microsoft hates to admit any negative or weakness and would go to great lengths to avoid the perception that there could be the least bit of trouble in paradise.

By allowing competition in this way, they are not openly making concessions. It can just be called a market miscalculation. It does force some of competition to show their hand sooner rather than later. It also takes the focus off of some of the other things that MS is doing and allows them to put more resources into those activities.
