Yes, it's probably time for Microsoft to "innovate".
Just a reminder: to Microsoft, innovating is doing what they haven't done before.

Why take action? Mindshare.
The perception that Microsoft has been quiescent anywher in their product line leaves a bad impression.

I expect that their innovation will take the form of buying a small company like Avant or Maxion. They'll incorporate the functions as an optional download and suddenly have more features than FireFox or any other competitor.

Microsoft, recapturing the lead in innovation with one (small) gesture.

And then they'll mention briefly that other browsers lack the capabilities Microsoft has had for years in IE, those extensions to the standards John Carroll has been extolling, to show how far Microsoft has gone ahead of the pack.

That'll easily carry them to Longhorn.

This is not an issue that's going to bring down Microsoft, despite the fond hopes of some here.
