"Smart card" is generic - SecureID is an example.
"Smart card" is a generic term. It could be a card or a "key-fob." They are probably smaller by now (although Motorola has been using cards for years - at least 1991) and the battery is guaranteed for life. Of course, they're probably expecting that the servie would be upgraded or tokens lost before the battery runs out. happy

No matter the mechanism, the point is that a separate physical device is used to better ensure that the person entering the user ID and password is the "owner" of that ID and password.

I'm actually interested to see how fingerprint devices flourish. They are gaining use being integrated into keyboards and mice.
