Smart cards? Think "ATM cards"...

ATM cards have the added security of having a built-in password called a "PIN", of course. And thank goodness there's never been any hint of ATM fraud, theft, tricking/forcing people into revealing their PINs, fake ATM machines etc.

Passwords may not be perfect, but a strong password can be very effective. (Providing you don't write it down.) Instead of getting rid of them, maybe systems should do more to prevent people setting weak passwords in the first place, like spending a few minutes trying to crack it before accepting it?
